◆ ARRIVAL  i

By Road, Rail, and Sea

By road from the south, leave the A1 at the Belford turning and follow the B1340 east through North Sunderland to Bay Lane. By rail, alight at Chathill on the East Coast main line; the duty warden will arrange the fifteen-minute drive on request, by note in advance or on the platform telephone. There is no scheduled ferry to Grimwald Bay; small craft may anchor in the lee of the southern groyne in summer, but the bay is not a working harbour.

◆ THE BAY PATH  ii

Walking In and Out

The bay path runs north from the south door of the hotel, along the seaward edge of the bluff, past the closed lantern station, and on to the rock-cut platform above Stag Rock. The path is uneven, taken at the guest’s own pace, and is unsuitable for wheels at any tide. The duty warden keeps a small box of walking sticks at the head of the south stair for guests who would care to borrow one.
